Most Common Causes of Neck Pain
Neck pain is a common complaint but what causes it? The causes of neck pain can be varied and may include poor posture, injury, or underlying medical conditions.
One of the most common causes of neck pain is poor posture. Sitting for long periods of time in front of a computer or holding a phone to your ear can lead to strain on the neck muscles. This can cause pain and stiffness in the neck, shoulders, and upper back. People who spend a lot of time driving or working at a desk are particularly susceptible to this type of neck pain.
Another common cause of neck pain is injury. Whiplash, a condition that occurs when the head is suddenly jerked forward and then backward, is a common cause of neck pain. This type of injury can happen in a car accident or during contact sports. Fractures, dislocations, and sprains can also cause neck pain.
Besides the above, there are underlying medical conditions that can also cause neck pain. Arthritis, fibromyalgia, and osteoporosis can all cause pain and stiffness in the neck. In addition, herniated discs, pinched nerves, and spinal stenosis can cause neck pain.
